BookPlan: How to market your nonfiction book

You’ve done it. . . .  You signed the publishing contract, sent in your manuscript, just approved the first round of edits, and are now sitting at your desk, contemplating your book’s quickly approaching launch date.

And that’s when the questions start coming:

“Wait a minute. How do I market this?”

“I have a vague idea of who my audience is, but how am I going to find them or reach them? Or convince them to listen to me?”

“I’m already super busy running a business. How do I market my book on top of that?”

BookPlan (known as the BK Nonfiction Book Marketing Workshop from 2006 to 2023) is a 3-day online event where authors and marketing/publishing professionals from the Berrett-Koehler community share strategies and tactics for launching your book, reaching your audience, and expanding your impact.

What You’ll Learn

Day 1 (Wednesday, April 3)

  • How to build a business around your book, or use your book to drive your existing business
     
  • How to develop a social media strategy that fits your needs, your brand, your audience, and your time constraints
     
  • How to use AI tools and other software to quickly and cheaply generate social media content, professional-looking graphics, and other marketing assets
     
  • How to develop an evergreen platform that generates paid speaking engagements, traffic to your website, signups for your programs, clients for your services, subscribers to your newsletter/mailing list, and sales for your book
     

Day 2 (Thursday, April 4)

  • How to use virtual summits to cross-promote to other experts’ existing audiences, exploding your email list without spending a penny on ads or doing any organic prospecting
     
  • How to land speaking gigs, give unforgettable presentations that move your audience to action, avoid the six most common mistakes made by speakers, and sell books in bulk while doing so
     
  • How to get bulk sales with corporations, nonprofits, educational institutions, and government entities
  • How to land guest articles in large and small publications and how to make the most out of them once they’re published
     

Day 3 (Friday, April 5)

  • How to launch your book, including which activities to prioritize and which might be a waste of time and money
     
  • How to navigate the evolving publishing and bookselling landscape
  • How to build a social movement around your book that’s bigger than you are
     
  • How to get booked on podcasts and nail your appearance as a podcast guest
  • At the end of the workshop, you’ll have some time to sift through what you’ve heard over the last 3 days and craft a concrete plan of action, tailored to your book and your specific situation

  • We focus exclusively on nonfiction. Most book marketing events serve both fiction and nonfiction authors. We focus specifically on how to market nonfiction books with a message: books on business innovation, personal development, social change, and organizational improvement.
  • We focus on published or soon-to-be-published authors. Many workshops focus heavily on the process of getting published (query letters, pitches, etc.) and not on what you need to do after you sign the publishing contract to build an audience, sell books long-term, and make a lasting impact with your message.
  • We’re online but still interactive. Forget the hassle of travel, hotel lodging, and parking. But also forget staring at a pre-recorded video series. Our workshop is packed with time to discuss ideas in small groups, brainstorm, receive feedback, and ask questions.
  • We offer a network of support. BK Authors, the hosting organization of BookPlan, is a close-knit group of nonfiction authors with activities year-round. At BookPlan, you can develop friendships with other authors who can help hold you accountable and actively support your book marketing efforts.
  • We provide breadth of expertise. This workshop isn’t one author’s “secret formula” (which only works for them). Instead, our speakers come from a variety of companies and represent a wide range of experts, including bestselling authors, publishing professionals, publicity agents, marketing strategists, and social media managers.
